Welcome to the Columbia University Black Theater Ensemble website!

The Columbia University Black Theater Ensemble (BTE, originally Black Theater Ensemble of Harlem at Columbia University) produces quality theater each fall and spring with and for the black community at Columbia and New York City at large. We seek to promote playwrights, actors, and theater artists of color, providing an outlet for creative expression within these communities, otherwise largely unavailable on campus. Our production choices are as diverse as our casts, ranging from student written one acts and short plays to classics of the black theater canon to contemporary and experimental pieces.

Here, you can find photos and videos from past performances; cast lists, promotional materials, reviews and articles in our archive; up-to-date information on what's happening with BTE on our blog; and contact info and access to our mailing list to receive periodical invitations to our meetings and events.

We encourage people of all backgrounds to audition for and enjoy our work. No experience necessary. Come join the BTE family for our next production!
